“We move a few thousand cattle each year between our properties, “Koolatah Station” in the Cape and “Thuriba Station” in Central Queensland. We have learnt that spelling our cattle overnight at Sugarbag Yards is invaluable. The cattle walk off the truck better and they get back into production a lot faster compared to if we try and move them straight through. We also really appreciate Brian’s assistance with the NLIS system and transferring all the cattle between the properties.”
(Russell & Janelle Saunders, Thuriba Grazing Company)
YARD SERVICES
All cattle are counted off the truck and NLIS scanned through our high-flow reader. Paperwork is completed and signed (with confirmed numbers) on both arrival and departure.
TICK CLEARING
No-one wants the frustration or cost of being held up longer than necessary – prevention with effective pre-treatment is your best bet.
Please call to discuss the most proven and effective pre-treatment options suitable for your class of cattle from the environment you are moving from.
For cattle from the Atherton Tablelands or Wet Coast (or from nearly anywhere after a big wet) we will generally recommend both an internal and external pre-treatment, ie. Injection AND plunge dip, then presenting on the cross-over time intervals.
Wait times:
Plunge Dip or Spray = 4 to 7 days
Injection or Pour-On = 6 to 9 days
(Note: timeframes apply to approved chemicals only as per labels or DPI off-label permits)
We define 4 days as 96 hours, and if there’s a heavy tick load to begin with we will often recommend waiting the extra day or two to allow the ticks to dry out fully.
Remember if we find a juicy tick, that’s classed by the DPI as a fail, and you must start the pre-treatment cycle again.
We have a different version of the 7 P’s (Proper Prior Planning Prevents P* Poor Performance) which is:- Plan ahead, Pre-treat with Precision, Present on time, Pass.
Give Brian a call, you can usually reach him between 7am and 9pm, 7 days a week, or leave a message and he’ll be sure to return your call.
"Sugarbag does all of our tick clearing. We’ve been using them since they opened and really appreciate the high level of service we get from Brian. If he finds a tick he helps us to understand why so we can improve our pre-treatments for the next time. We also really value his assistance with the NLIS transfers."
(Iain Witherspoon, "York Downs" Weipa and "Balcoma" Richmond)
"Brian pays attention to cattle numbers and tags. He has provided tremendous assistance with our online cattle movements and helped me to sort numerous issues with our NLIS database.” (Kim Ollson, Weona Station/CKJ Contracting Qld)
NLIS TRANSFERS & DATABASE ASSISTANCE
By law, all cattle moving in Australia must have a National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) tag and each movement must be uploaded to the database within 48 hours.
We complete this transfer on your behalf as part of our Yard Services (included in the handling fee).
Our high-flow reader (total of 8 readers in the panel located within the laneway) ensures efficient and low-stress reading while we also do a physical count. If we don't get 100% read on the first pass-through (during unloading) then the mob is simply run back up the laneway (Note: it is usually only smaller animals passing through in bulk that may not read on the first pass, due to computer speeds). The physical count and NLIS count is reconciled with the NVD (National Vendor Declaration) and vendors are advised of any discprencies.
Ensuring accuracy in numbers and correct paperwork is not only good business feedback for you but it also helps us to meet our biosecurity and DPI audit requirements. As an accredited yard we are required to report any missing or non-functioning tags to the DPI stock inspector.
We are also required to replace any missing tags. This can be a time-consuming process to identify the animal, draft it, and process it through the headbail with a replacement tag.
As we work with the database on a daily basis we have an excellent working knowledge of the system and are happy to help our clients resolve any discrepancies - please don't hesitate to ask.
At any time we are happy to provide you with copies of the NLIS scan files and paperwork. We keep these on hand for 7 years.
